留守番電話

「留守番電話」は answering machine と和英辞典には記載されていますが、これは固定電話の留守番電話のことで、携帯電話の場合は voice mail が使われます。また、「携帯に電話をかけたけど、留守番電話だった」という時に使われる go straight [right] to voice mail という表現があります。例を見てみましょう。

(1) I tried her cell phone, but it went straight to voice mail. -- Castle, S1E2

(2) He's not in his office. We keep calling, but it's going straight to voice mail. 

     -- Lie to Me, S2E5

(3) Her cellphone goes right to voice mail. -- Veronica Mars, S2E15

この (3) のように straight の代わりに right が使われることもあります。

Nana

相手のことを Nana. と呼んでいる時、「ナナ」という名前の人を呼んでいる場合もあるのですが、ほとんどの場合「おばあちゃん」と呼びかけています。nana を『ウイズダム英和辞典』で調べると、= nanny [2]とあり、nanny [2] には、「((英・小児・くだけて))おばあちゃん」と書いてあるのですが、次の例のように、アメリカでも使われています。次の例は『探偵モンク』の一場面で、少女が家に帰ってくると、おばあさんが男達に誘拐されるところで、「おばあちゃん！」と呼びかけています。

Girl: Hey! Hey, what are you doing?

Man 1: Careful.

Girl: Nana!

Man 2: Be careful.!

Girl: Nana? Nana.! Nana.! What are you doing? Hey, stop! Nana! What... Help! Somebody!

おばあさんの盗まれた絵が戻って来た時に、孫がおばあさんに「おばあちゃんのだよ」と言っていますが、この孫は30歳ほどで、Nana という語を使っています。つまり、((小児))だけに限らないことが分かるのです。

Don: The Hungarian police just delivered it to us.

Man: It's yours, Nana.

上の二つは呼びかけ語として使われている例ですが、次のように呼びかけでない時にも使われます。

Aaron always talks about his nana.

ホテルの星の数

欧米ではレストランとホテルのランク付けが星で示されている。レストランは星の数で３ランクに、ホテルは星の数で５ランクに分類されています。このランク付けの基準は、一般的に、第3者格付け機関によって、1. クォリティ、2.サービス、3.ファシリティ（レストラン、プール、ジム、ビジネスセンター）などを総合的に評価して格付けされていると言われていますが、設備を中心に具体的かつ簡単に説明しているのを、イギリスのテレビドラマのナレーションの部分で見つけました。

You need to know what you're getting for your money, which is why every hotel is graded by stars.

One star, you get a bed and a toilet.

Two stars, you get the bed, you get the toilet and you get the bath.

Three stars, you get the bed, the toilet, the bath, the telly and room service.

Four stars, you get the bed, the toilet, the bath, the telly, room service, laundry collection and the gym.

Five stars, you get it all and more.

カミソリ負け

「カミソリ負け」というのを和英辞典を引くと razor rash が載せられているが、アメリカ英語では普通 razor burn が使われる。

A: Even the sharpest of razors, on a -- on a shave this close would cause pseudofolliculitis barbae, aka...

B: Razor burn.

Duck: Yeah.

検死官のダックが死体の状態を見て「どんなに鋭い剃刀でも、これだけ深剃りすれば尋常性毛瘡を引き起こす」と説明して、助手に「別名は？」と聞いて、助手の知識の確認をしている場面です。

What? Ok, stop. Air. And I'm getting razor burn.

こちらは、映画館で恋人同士がキスをしていて、男の方が執拗にキスをして来るので、苦しくなった女の方が「空気を吸わせて」と言っている場面。ヒゲがあたって「カミソリ負けみたいになるわ！」と言っている。

Are we square?

square はくだけた会話では、よく「貸し借りの無い」という意味で使われます。その場合、決まり文句で使われるのが、「これでおあいこだね？」「これでちゃらにしてくれる？」という意味の Are we square? という表現です。

(1) A: So we good now? Are we square?

     B: No, because nothing I do will ever be as badas what you did to me.

     -- Gossip Girl, S1E3

(2) A: Your man must have been bringing it back to him when he got shot.  Are we square?

     B: No, we ain't square. You tell us where to find Francisco.

     -- Cold Case, S6E17

もちろん、次のように make/get us square 「お互いの貸し借りを無しにする」という表現でもよく使われます。

(3) A: That makes us square?

     B: No. But it's a good start.

(4) A: This get us square?

     B: Yeah.

Don’t wait up for me.

wait up for 〜 という表現は「〜の帰宅を寝ないで待つ」という意味で使われます。頻繁に否定文で使われます。つまり「先に寝ていていいよ」という場合にDon't wait up for me. という表現が使われるのです。和英辞典でこの表現を扱っているものは少ないと思います。

(1) I'm gonna be late for dinner, Dad. Don't wait up for me.

(2) Don't wait up for me, kids. Mama's on the prowl.

   -- Castle, S2E8

(3) A: Hello.

   B: Why are you up?

   A: I could ask you the same question.

   B: I'm going to bed.

   A: I didn't ask you to wait up for me.

   -- Desperate Housewives, S1E10

(3) では、妻が「お帰り」と言い、それに対し「なぜ起きているんだ」と夫が聞いています。この時に使われている表現は be up という簡単な表現です。また、最後の表現は「寝ないで待っていてくれとは頼んだ覚えがないぞ」という意味で、この夫婦の気持のすれ違いを表しています。

呼びかけ語としての gents

インフォーマルな口語英語では gets という語が呼びかけ語として gentlemen の代わりによく使われます。これは英米の差は無いようです。例を見て見ましょう。

(1) Well, it was very nice to meet you gents.

(2) Okay, gents. Drink time.

   -- Hotel Babylon, S3E6 (BrE)

次の例は、決まり文句の ladies and gentlemen の代わりにladies and gets が使われています。

(3) Hey, step right up, ladies and gents.

   -- Flash Forward, S1E16 (AmE)

(4) Okay, here we go, then, ladies and gents.

   -- Torchwood, S3E6 (BrE)

なお、これは呼びかけ語ではないのですが、the gents(’) で男性用トイレを表します。また、女性用トイレは the ladies(') です。

(5) A: Uh, excuse me. Where's the--

   B: Oh, the ladies' is around-- and the gents', the opposite.
