1940年代に人気があったアメリカの Take It or Leave It （後に番組名をThe $64 Question と改名）というラジオのクイズ番組で出される難しい問題の賞金の最高額が$64だったことから、「難しい問題」という意味で使われるのですが、1955年からThe $64,000 Question というテレビ版の番組が始まった。それもあって、「難しい問題」を $64,000 Question と呼ぶ事もあります。
テレビドラマでこの表現を見てみると、登場人物が年配の場合$64 questionを使って、若い人の場合は $64,000 question を使っているようです。

(1) は主人公のハンクの弟が、ガールフレンドの家に行った時の彼女のお父さんの発言です。また (2) は老練の警部コロンボの発言です。それに対して、(3) と(4) の話者は比較的若い登場人物です。
